Highlights
Grotto Canyon has some gems. You will start your hike by walking past a big mill, don't get discouraged, keep going. Soon you will enter the canyon and will be instantly wowed! Due to all the ice, we were able to hike right on the frozen river and up to the frozen waterfalls (my son and I climbed the waterfall because it wasn't very steep, which I slipped and slid down on my bum, hahaha). We got to see ice climbers tackling the waterfalls from afar. Continuing on up the river, we found a very cool cave that the boys had to climb and explore. We managed to hike for close to 9km in total, stopping at the halfway point to have a nice picnic on a rock before heading back. We didn't take the river back, we chose the higher ground, it must be the trail you would take in the spring and summer seasons, it is very nice on that trail as well.

Final Thoughts
We really enjoyed this hike and could see ourselves coming back in the summer to possibly camp by the river. There were lots of families with kids and pups, so it is a kid & pup-friendly trail as long as your dog is on leash. You can hike just to the waterfalls or continue on past the cave and onwards. So much to explore here!
